Campaign Roundup: 9/25

September 26th, 2008 by Dan Rozenson

Sarah Palin had her second major interview with the media, this one spread over two days and conducted by Katie Couric. It’s embarrassing. Really, truly embarrassing. Palin just does not know what she’s talking about. I’m fairly confident that most readers of the Blue Line could answer better than Palin did vis-a-vis why an increased U.S. troop presence in Afghanistan might reduce insurgent activity there:

“Because we can’t afford to lose in Afghanistan, as we cannot afford to lose in Iraq, either, these central fronts on the war on terror.”

Well put! We can’t afford to lose in Afghanistan or Iraq, thus we won’t. I love the simplicity of international relations these days! We also can’t afford a $700 billion federal bailout of bad debt, thus we won’t try to create a bailout package that would . . . never mind. Let’s get some more insight from Ms. Palin, this time on whether the Pakistani government is protecting the Taliban and al Qaeda:

I don’t believe that new President Zardari has that mission at all. But no, the Pakistani people also, they want freedom. They want democratic values to be allowed in their country, also. They understand the dangers of terrorists having a stronghold in regions of their country, also. And I believe that they, too, want to rid not only their country, but the world, of violent Islamic terrorists.

She doesn’t get points from originality for this one, because President Bush has already given this answer several trillions of times, but again — the simplicity factor just wowed me. Who would have thought that discussing concrete issues such as the Pashtun-populated areas near the border of Afghanistan where Osama bin Laden is probably hiding were entirely irrelevant? It’s OK — the Pakistanis just want freedom!

Also today, the bizarre saga that has surrounded McCain’s decision to “suspend” his campaign got even stranger. For one thing, McCain hasn’t suspended it. He spoke at the Clinton Global Initiative meeting today, he conducted interviews on all three network TV stations tonight, surrogates are still hitting the airwaves, and he’s apparently still running advertisements.

Oh, and guess what. Paulson’s bailout proposal which McCain needs to “save” by heading back to Washington? He hasn’t read it yet.

Great post. We’ve actually listened to this ignorant yapping before, and look where it’s gotten us. As Joe Biden would say, “that’s not change, that’s more of the same!”
